Objectification and vision: how images shape our early visual processes

چکیده
Objectification involves treating someone (a subject) as a thing (an object). The role of images in perpetuating objectification has been discussed by feminist philosophers. However, the precise effect that have on an individual's visual system is seldom explored. Kathleen Stock’s work exception—she describes certain women causing viewers to develop objectifying ‘gestalt’ which then projected onto real-life women. she doesn’t specify level processing at occurs. In this paper, I propose can affect viewer's early system. will argue if viewer exposed lot depict sexual objects, bias their selection mechanisms way result seeing. This important contribution it incorporates empirical studies vision and findings from philosophy mind. It also examines some epistemic moral consequences occurring stage.

متن کاملStatistical Models of Images and Early Vision
A fundamental question in visual neuroscience is: Why are the receptive fields and response properties of visual neurons as they are? A modern approach to this problem emphasizes the importance of adaptation to ecologically valid input. In this paper, we will review work on modelling statistical regularities in ecologically valid visual input (“natural images”) and the obtained functional expla...
متن کاملEarly vision: Images, context and memory
Visual perception involves image transformations, producing internal images with some useful features enhanced, possibly linked. Enhancement is a result of local transformations being context dependent, affected either by remote image regions or by visual memory. Psychophysical experiments show that early vision generates an image that, although dominated by the retinal output, contains a conte...
متن کاملLow vision: understanding how low- level visual and oculomotor processes are specifically affected
Dr Eric Castet is a researcher at the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research) in Marseilles (Aix-Marseille University, France). He is a psychophysicist who started working on low-level visual processes involved in motion perception. Since 1999, he has been investigating how saccadic eye movements interact with visual perception and attention. These issues have mostly been tackled with a ...
متن کاملVisual perception of complex shape-transforming processes
Morphogenesis-or the origin of complex natural form-has long fascinated researchers from practically every branch of science. However, we know practically nothing about how we perceive and understand such processes. Here, we measured how observers visually infer shape-transforming processes. Participants viewed pairs of objects ('before' and 'after' a transformation) and identified points that ...
